Prescription Drugs On the Rise

A recent study suggested that illegal “street” drugs were on a decline while prescription drug abuse was on the rise. In particular, the adolescent demographic prescription drug abuse epidemic was frightening with some studies suggesting that 10% of teenagers (age 12-17) receiving emergency treatment admitted to abusing prescription drugs.  This is the total number of teens admitting prescription drug abuse not the total number of teens on prescription drugs.

Other studies show that in cases of over dose there are roughly 45% which can be attributed back to prescription drug abuse while the total combined illegal “street” drugs contribute to only 40%.

The most shocking aspect of these individual cases is that they are quickly becoming the norm in drug abuse.  One of the leading reasons these trends continue to rise is due to the availability of prescription drugs.

If new regulation does not intelligently address prescription drug abuse then this epidemic will continue.

The Drug Cycle

The surprising facts about drug and alcohol usage as well as the recovery process are the sheer volume.  Drugs and alcohol are more prolific now than any other time in recorded history.  The increase in drug and alcohol abuse is a direct correlation to this.

The Cycle of Drug Use

Take the above scenario plus a prolonged recession as well as other short and long-term economic factors, as well as additional stressful scenarios and drugs are an easy escape which allows cheap relief. Of course this short relief only exacerbates one’s problems it therefore is sought after more and more frequently as the terrible cycle of the body becomes more accustom to the mind altering effects in addition to the body’s dependency grows on such substance.
This vicious cycle can is so extremely effective that the rise of drug abuse facilities cannot keep up with all of the new incoming patients and the cycle worsens.

Hope Through Experience

The fastest possible escape is through a treatment center. Some studies suggest that you are 95% more likely to successfully stay off of drugs through a treatment facility vs going it alone.  So if you or someone you know is addicted to alcohol or drugs please contact a rehabilitation center that you trust.

Treatment Options

Treatment can truly start at any point and is completely dependent upon the individual.  These are commonly seen as milestones from the patients and further progression is needed until the final steps are achieved.  Despite this the PaRC makes it very clear that there is no end to recovery it is a way of life that every patient must adopt in order to truly be successful.

The levels of treatment are:

  1. Medical Detox - the patient rids the body of all previous toxins (usually 3-5 days)
  2. Residential Treatment - this can be any length of time however the patient lives within a facility and is continually busy with many activities while learning about the recovery process and how to cope with the outside world and live a enjoyable, productive life. (30 - 90 days)
  3. Partial Hospitalization Program - this is similar to residential treatment however you only attend treatment during the day and are able to sleep at home.  This is an excellent transition to one's normal life. (>30)
  4. Intensive Outpatient Treatment - this is the next step of treatment and it is 4 days a week for about 3 hours for each session.  (~30 days)
